Chinese characters are always written that way. I'm a little sad to say that I hardly remember and hardly ever took the time to understand it when I was in elementary. These characters are full of wisdom and I suppose this one is just trying to tell you to take it easy or something. Death may not necessarily be a physical one. It could be death of a passion or death of an interest.
