It would be funnier if the straight guy was beating up the gay guy.

Can you say stereotype? Why didn't you have an Asian man doing laundry and cooking a cat next in a rice field? or How about a black man eating watermelon?

Lets try to break down the barriers Mr. Karnjanaprakorn and look into equality.

Would someone please post an essay here about how this video perpetuates gay stereotypes and why this is offensive to the gay community... cause all I'm seeing here is a joke about prison relationships, this one happens to be a gay one. I understand there is a gay stereotype related to prisoners, but i don't see how that is offensive to gay people. I don't see the connection. Help me out here. I see some people are offended here, and really want to understand. -Sincerely

Lets talk about the word AXIOMATIC.

It sure is a BIG word.

If you write advertising copy, chances are you won’t use it. But you will use THEM. You will use AXIOMS.

Wikipedia says, an axiom is an evident truth which does not need any explanation and is accepted without any demonstration or proof.

This spot uses “fags rape you when you go to jail” as an axiomatic punch line. Everyone knows “Quit scrubbin’ so hard you big tease” does NOT mean, “I prefer the cell dirty, you joker man you.”

At the VCU We’re #1 Adcenter, I have to read a lot of ads where being gay or having a crazy gay uncle come to your party or realizing your son is gay …is an accepted and funny punch line to a situation. It is something we can point to as a universal: “no! not that!”

Fred Phelps himself is tired of this joke. And I am tired of this joke.

I can only assume in the next episode, the man will be covered in K-sores because they come with AIDS, which come with FAGS which come with JAIL. (“no! not that!”)

I don’t think the copywriter of this ad came in from an anti-gay march, put down his (or her) bull horn, blew out his (or her) torch and sat down to make fun of gay people.

I don’t think they thought about it at all. And that is what worries me. It worries me that the people who read this blog like Mr. (or Ms.) Huh? Are left scratching their heads wondering why there is a problem. This is not a comment on “prison relationships”. It is a comment on the obliviousness of this industry.

It is not surprising that a country that laughs out loud with a gay punch line also laughs out loud when gay people want equality.

But guess what? Gay people go to Adcenter. Gay people are going into advertising and GAY people have a few new punch lines to try out. And when they are produced, there will be peels of GAY laughter because we all know the axiom, "what goes around comes around".

See how I connected it back to the beginning?
I learned that in ADVERTISING.

I agree, it is not a good thing that people like myself don't initially understand what is so offensive. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to spell this out to me. I'm also glad that this is written out for others to read on these comments. It truly breaks my heart when people are offended, and though I have nothing to do with this ad we are discussing, I feel bad I didn't get why or how this would be seen as offensive. My apologies. I think it's very cool that you have opened up this discussion.

"Axioms", I'll remember that.
Thanks sincerely.
