Advertising by Design

VCU Adcenter has been recently mentioned in a Businessweek article about breaking down the barriers between managers and creatives.
- Founded just over a decade ago as an independent institution within VCU, Adcenter is designed to give students an insight into developments within the advertising industry. These days, that includes analysis of trends in new media or direct brand experiences. Instead of getting students to make portfolios of print or television campaigns—the more traditional approach—students work on holistic brand-innovation projects, designing packaging or retail stores.
The Creative Brand Management track at the Adcenter is one of the many things that will create innovation within the industry. The Adcenter is now competing with top schools such as MIT, Harvard, etc and even took home some top honors at the recent Innovation Challenge hosted by Thunderbird. Watch out now!

I think the holistic approach is great because it allows people with a real creative talent that doesn't fit into typical portfolio standards to show off their stuff.
