What We Learned: W+K 12 Year 1
So I recently came across this book called What We Learned, which presents what it was like to be part of W+K's 12 program. Designed by Jelly Helm, it will remind you a lot of the old Sixty Weeks black book that we got when we applied to Adcenter. It feels heavy like a textbook and has 400 pointers that the kids from 12 compiled.
Overall, it's worth going through to see the projects they did and what the whole 12 experiment meant. Sad thing is, I think they only printed less than 300 copies. But I just want to get the word out, so if you do come across it, you'll know what it looks like and what it is.
Here's some pics:
The Cover:
#27 will make you laugh:
Here's one that I took with me. I think it's really important and I can't stress how important it is for students. It's something you need to do while in school and while you're trying to discover yourself. Advertising is like this tree with all these branches. You need to find the one branch that you believe in and let yourself grow from there. It's something I believe in and also one of the reasons why rm116 exists.

That 12 is a bunch of cracked out monkeys. But it's the best bunch of monkeys I've ever picked fleas off of.
Apply. It's the smartest, stupidest, hardest thing you'll ever do. Changed my life.
Viva Jelly.

Does anybody know how to get hold of a copy? Brian, maybe you can tell us? It sounds like something that's worth having as a constant career guide!

Obviously it was not the "smartest, hardest thing you ever did" since you are telling people to apply to 12 ON ADCENTER'S blog. Are you guys that desperate. I'll give you this. Maybe it was the "stupidest" thing you ever did.

The book looks very McSweeney's-ish. But only 400 pointers? How thick are those pages?
And who is Bob?
Posted by: John | Nov 6, 2005 4:23:06 PM
Bobby--you need to chill out.
Posted by: kevin | Nov 6, 2005 8:37:22 PM
God I hope this Bob person isn't an Adcenter student. Please Jebus, make that so.

I like Bob's use of quotation marks.

Just trying to find out how to get my hands on one of these books!
Posted by: Amanda | Nov 29, 2005 6:28:06 PM
luke and bob: who's recruiting? i never read a word about recruiting. everyone's just been talking about the book or how to get their hands on the book -- which even bryan admitted (and showed) was worth checking out. and reading the first post, elisa just said she's happy to be in 12. so good for her.
i thought rm116 was about what's happening in advertising? this 12 book is something that's happening in advertising. so it fits the bill. clearly, lots of people read this blog from all over (not just VCU students) because it's a good, current, smart blog about the state of advertising. i think the fact that luke and bob have said that this discussion essentially "lacks class" is incorrect. i haven't read one word from w+k or 12 that is asking people to apply.
instead, consider this: 12 made a limited number of books. then they sent them to a select group of interesting people. people hear about this and then want to know what's in the book. and of course, people want to be considered intersting. so now, people are scouring the internet looking for them in resourceful ways. isn't there a lesson about successful marketing in there somewhere?
i guess my point is: there's room for 12, VCU, Miami Ad School, the school of life and whatever else. please rm116, keep information like this coming and leave it to me to sort out whether it's for me or not.

In that case, I'd like to start recruiting Adcenter kids for the School of Life. We have a fantastic semester abroad program, and our annual basketball game with the School of Hard Knocks inspires wonderful displays of school spirit and lively debate.

Well now that we’re making recommendations, may I add the prestigious School of Thought. Actually, there are two Schools of Thought to consider: University of Thought and Thought State. UT is Ivy League. State has the football. Let's go State!

Adcenter rules and WK12 drools. Get your silly books, and pay W&K 30K, they'll be happy to have your indentured servitude. Unless you're boring. Freakin' turncoats. Let's get married Bob.
Posted by: yourmama | Dec 2, 2005 3:01:23 PM
Bob- Don't marry your Mom. That's weird and not sanctioned in this country.
On to "yourmama", are you mad because you're boring? What the hell are you actually saying?
Posted by: Fairbrother | Dec 2, 2005 3:59:58 PM
Might I mention there are a lot of egomaniacs in advertising and at the Adcenter. You know who you are and you make me sick.
Posted by: puhhhlease! | Dec 2, 2005 4:54:48 PM
That's good Ms. Puhhhlease. I'm sorry I made you sick.
Posted by: Fairbrother | Dec 2, 2005 5:07:59 PM
Yes, I'm mad because I'm boring. And can't afford Jelly to save me. Bummer, that.
Posted by: yourmama | Dec 2, 2005 5:09:43 PM
Yourmama: in English, please explain your beef against Jelly. And paying for ad school. Since when is Adcenter free? Seriously. I want to understand.
Posted by: person a | Dec 2, 2005 5:16:53 PM
Egomaniacs in advertsing? Why, next you'll claim that sunsets are pretty or ice cream is delicious! Outrageous!
Posted by: Marc | Dec 2, 2005 5:19:31 PM
English, eh? All right person a. My real beef is with WK12, not Jelly. Mr. Helm is actually in my top 2 as far as teachers go. But enough Jelly-love. His cup runneth over.
The only thing I have against other ad schools is that they're not the Adcenter. Chalk it up to loyalty.
Okay, your turn. Put me in my place.
