as a VW owner and enthusiast...I don't know what happened but these new ads are pretty ridiculous compared to the beautiful stuff they put out 5/6 years ago during the launch of the mark IV jetta/golf/beetle etc.
I do however enjoy the new Passat ad touting the steerable bi-xenon head lamps. Anyone seen it? This guy in a Passat guides a biker to safety with his steerable headlights when the biker's light goes out. It's a cool ad, and features that classic "On the road of life, there are passengers and there drivers" tagline. I enjoyed that one.

I thought the sushi/climate controlled glove compartment spot was quite good as well.
The Beetle have some "hippie" roots, though not as strong as the hippie van. I can see where they wanted to go with it, and where it fell short. But then again most automaker web sites are pretty bad. Has anyone seen Honda.com lately?

I disagree. I think they're fantastic. However, I think the woman from Mini probably told them, "be more like Crispin." And it looks like they tried a little too hard to get outside of themselves.

Both spots had far greater potential than the execution allowed. I agree that there seems to be a definite Crispin like feel (wannabe) to the viral, and I can only hope that they charge forth in another direction. No need for one trick ponies.

I agree about the Mini client having a big impact on this one. Some of the best people in the business worked on these things, but I have to say, I'm a little disappointed - not conceptually, but executionally.
I think the idea is fantastic. But what if this had been done with subtlety, ala much of the rest of the VW brand? I think it could have been extraordinary.
The "look at me" campiness hurt this campaign, in my opinion. I realize I'm not the target, but the target likes cool things, too. Brands that don't have to try too hard. And this was just a little more hokey and a little less cool than it could have been.
I think it's also proof that you shouldn't let what someone else is doing color your own work too much. In this case I'm afraid they might have had their eye on an agency in Miami instead of the eseence of a great brand's soul.

I think that is blows and wouldn't be surprised if Crispin actually did it. They're style is getting to contrived and tired. You can sniff they're stuff out from a mile away.
